What is ApeCoin (APE)?
ApeCoin (APE) gives its holders a say in how the ecosystem around Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) evolves. That ecosystem spans digital collectibles, games, events, and services built by third-party developers. Holding the token means weighing in directly on where the whole project goes next.
How and where is the APE token used?
APE is an ERC-20 token issued on Ethereum and also circulates on BNB Smart Chain. Its primary job is governance: each token held translates into voting power within ApeCoin DAO. On ApeChain, a layer-3 network launched in 2024, APE also pays for transaction fees. The total supply is fixed at 1 billion tokens, and the contract cannot mint any more.
How do decisions get made in ApeCoin DAO?
Proposals, called AIPs (Ape Improvement Proposals), can be submitted by any APE holder with the technical knowledge to draft one. Every address that holds APE can vote, with weight proportional to the amount held. The ApeCoin Foundation, a Cayman Islands entity, implements whatever passes. The entire structure was deliberately separated from Yuga Labs so that token holders, not a single company, steer the ecosystem.
