What is Audius (AUDIO)?
Audius (AUDIO) is a music streaming protocol where tracks are stored and distributed by independent node operators rather than a single company's servers. Artists can upload their work directly to listeners, and anyone can stream the catalog for free. The platform spans two blockchains: Ethereum for the AUDIO token and Solana for fast content operations.
What does the AUDIO token do?
AUDIO serves three main functions across the protocol. Node operators stake it to register their services, secure the network, and earn ongoing rewards. Token holders use it to vote on proposals that shape the protocol's direction. Additionally, staking unlocks artist-specific tools such as badges and the ability to display verified NFT collections on a profile.
How does the Audius network store and serve music?
Music files on Audius are not held in one central location. Two types of nodes share the work: content nodes store track files and handle streaming, while discovery nodes maintain an index of metadata so users can search and browse the catalog. Operators must stake AUDIO to run these services. Artists can upload without paying fees, and those who want full custody of their music can operate their own content node to keep control of the encryption keys.
Why does Audius use both Ethereum and Solana?
The AUDIO token exists as an ERC-20 asset on Ethereum, where staking and governance take place. However, operations that require high throughput, such as content interactions and payments, are handled on Solana to take advantage of lower transaction costs. The dual-chain design keeps governance on Ethereum's established infrastructure while offloading frequent activity to a faster network.
