What is Axie Infinity (AXS)?
In Axie Infinity, players own, breed and battle Axies — unique digital creatures represented as NFTs. The ecosystem's central token, AXS, works both as a governance coin and as the reward distributed through competitive play.
What does NFT ownership mean for players?
Every Axie is built from six body parts, each carrying genes from different classes such as aquatic, beast, bird, bug, plant or reptile. When two Axies are bred, the offspring inherits traits from both parents, creating a brand-new NFT. Because the creature sits in the player's own wallet, it can be sold on the marketplace, lent to other players through scholarships, or kept as a battle asset. The time and effort spent in the game therefore turn into a tangible item the player fully controls.
Where does AXS fit into the game loop?
AXS does more than trade on exchanges. Holders can vote on how the community treasury is spent and which projects the ecosystem fund supports. Tokens can be staked to earn rewards. Breeding a new Axie costs AXS as well as SLP (Smooth Love Potion), the second in-game token earned from battles. Players who climb high enough in ranked PvP matches also receive AXS payouts, linking competitive success to the on-chain economy.
Why did Sky Mavis build the Ronin sidechain?
Early on, Axie Infinity ran directly on Ethereum, where every move required a gas fee. As the network grew busier, those costs made the game expensive to play. In 2021, developer Sky Mavis launched Ronin, a sidechain purpose-built for the game, and moved most in-game assets there. Ronin uses a small validator set to keep fees low and confirm transactions quickly, though this trades off the broader decentralization of Ethereum's main chain. AXS itself also exists on Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain and Solana, but almost all gameplay activity flows through Ronin.
