What is Basic Attention Token (BAT)?

Basic Attention Token (BAT) is a cryptocurrency launched on Ethereum that serves as the payment and reward unit inside the Brave browser's advertising system. It is also available on BNB Smart Chain, Avalanche C-Chain, and Solana. The project proposes a model in which users earn for the ads they choose to see while publishers receive a more equitable share of the revenue that campaigns generate.

What makes BAT's approach to digital advertising different?

Conventional online advertising collects user data at scale, slows page loads with heavy ad code, and leaves publishers with a fraction of the money spent. The Brave browser, which BAT is tied to, starts by blocking ads and trackers automatically. Users who opt in then see notification-style ads; all matching is performed on the device itself, so personal data never leaves the computer. In return, users receive BAT for the attention they give, and advertisers can target a genuinely interested audience without invasive tracking.

How BAT functions within the Brave ecosystem

The token plays three practical roles across the platform:

  • User rewards: People who view privacy-preserving ads are paid in BAT. Payouts are calculated monthly and reflect the number of ads the user has engaged with.
  • Creator support: Earned BAT can be sent as a tip to verified websites, YouTube channels, or social accounts, enabling a direct flow of value from audience to creator.
  • Advertiser payments: Companies buy campaign inventory on Brave using BAT, which channels advertising revenue straight into the ecosystem rather than through layers of intermediaries.

What sets the project apart, and where do doubts remain?

BAT's defining characteristic is its connection to a real consumer product with tens of millions of monthly active users, built under the guidance of JavaScript creator and Mozilla co-founder Brendan Eich. The browser has expanded into a broader product family that includes Brave Search and the Leo AI assistant. Still, growing user numbers have not translated into a clear rise in token demand—a tension that has followed BAT for years. Many users either never activate the rewards feature or sell earned tokens quickly, which limits the buy pressure the ecosystem can create. Furthermore, Brave's reliance on advertising revenue means the token's economy is tied to the cycles of the broader ad market. The total supply is fixed at 1.5 billion tokens, virtually all of which are already in circulation, so the price equation is shaped entirely by demand rather than by future unlocks.
