Chromia (CHR) is a blockchain platform that brings relational database logic on-chain, enabling decentralized applications (dApps) to handle complex data relationships efficiently. Each dApp runs on its own sidechain, so high activity inside one application does not slow down the rest of the network.
What Is CHR Used for Within the Network?
CHR is the utility token that powers the Chromia ecosystem. Developers pay CHR to host their dApps, with the cost scaling according to the resources the application consumes. End users generally see no gas fees; developers absorb that cost, which can make the user experience smoother.
Token holders can stake CHR to help secure the network and earn rewards. The token also carries governance weight, allowing holders to vote on protocol upgrades and how ecosystem funds are allocated. Some dApps also use CHR for in-app purchases or as an access credential.
Why Chromia Stores Data Differently from Most Blockchains
Instead of relying on key-value pairs, Chromia organizes on-chain data in structured tables with defined relationships. Developers write dApps in Rell, a purpose-built language that combines SQL-style querying with a syntax familiar to JavaScript users. This allows a single transaction to read or update hundreds of records at once.
Running each dApp on its own blockchain lets the network process transactions in parallel, improving overall throughput. The consensus mechanism is Byzantine Fault Tolerant, and the network anchors its history to proof-of-work chains like Bitcoin for extra security. Chromia was built by the Swedish company ChromaWay, a team known for early experiments with colored coins on Bitcoin. The platform's growth depends partly on how widely Rell is adopted and how well it competes in crowded sectors like gaming and DeFi.
