What is Decentraland (MANA)?

Decentraland (MANA) is a three-dimensional virtual world owned and operated by its users. Unlike a traditional online game, no single company controls it; instead, the rules and future direction of the platform are decided through votes cast by MANA and LAND holders. Accessible through a web browser or a VR headset, this universe allows people to build their own games, event spaces, and galleries, opening them up for others to explore.

How does ownership work in Decentraland?

The platform's economy relies on two core assets. The first is MANA, the token used as a medium of exchange. The second is LAND, NFTs that represent parcels of virtual real estate. Acquiring a new LAND parcel requires you to permanently destroy, or burn, a specific amount of MANA, a mechanism that gradually reduces the circulating supply. A small percentage of MANA is also burned during peer-to-peer transactions in the marketplace.

Anything you build on your LAND belongs entirely to you. Whether it is a concert venue, an art gallery, or an interactive game, you are free to shape the space and monetize it. All ownership records are kept transparently on the Ethereum blockchain.

How do MANA holders participate in governance?

A defining feature of Decentraland is its governance through a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO). Anyone holding MANA or LAND in their wallet can vote on policy updates, content moderation rules, and future development priorities. Voting power is weighted by the amount of assets held, ensuring that decisions are made by the community rather than a central entity.

This structure introduces not only technical risks, such as potential smart contract vulnerabilities, but also governance-specific risks. Low voter turnout or malicious proposals could harm the platform, meaning its health depends on an active and vigilant community.

What makes Decentraland different?

Many virtual worlds let users create content, but ultimate ownership stays with the operating company. In Decentraland, if you own a LAND parcel, you can sell it along with everything on it, or clear it entirely, just like physical property. The platform stands out by offering this sense of true digital ownership and a structure that operates independently from any corporation.
