What is Numeraire (NMR)?
Numeraire (NMR) is the Ethereum token that powers Numerai, an AI-driven hedge fund. Launched in 2017 without a public sale, NMR was distributed directly to data scientists already contributing to the platform. Today it serves as the instrument through which participants stake confidence in their stock market predictions. Data scientists worldwide train machine learning models on encrypted financial data and submit their forecasts to weekly tournaments, backing them with NMR.
Staking NMR aligns incentives
Each tournament features a dollar-denominated prize pool. Participants stake NMR on their models and set a "confidence" value — the amount of NMR they are willing to risk for each dollar of potential reward. After the evaluation period, models are tested on new data. Those that perform well receive their stake back plus a share of the pool. Models that fail cause the staked NMR to be permanently burned by the smart contract. This direct economic link makes overfitting economically irrational and ensures that only robust, generalisable strategies rise to the top.
A supply that shrinks through failure
NMR has a fixed maximum supply of 11 million tokens. Tournament rewards release new tokens gradually, but every burned stake removes NMR from circulation forever. The total supply therefore decreases over time, a deflationary pressure rooted directly in tournament outcomes rather than speculation. The mechanism encourages participants to submit only predictions that they truly believe will hold up against future data.
Transparent, on-chain tournaments
All staking, reward distribution and burning occur on Ethereum, auditable by anyone. While Numerai prepares the encrypted datasets and runs the competition, the NMR economic layer operates entirely on-chain. Data scientists can verify how rewards are distributed and that burns are executed exactly as coded. The combined output of all staked models forms a "meta model" that drives the hedge fund’s real-world trades.
