What is Ripple USD (RLUSD)?

RLUSD, the stablecoin issued by Ripple, holds its value steady at one US dollar through a full-reserve mechanism. Built with institutional cross-border payments in mind, it combines the speed of the XRP Ledger with the stability of a fiat-backed asset. By operating on both the XRP Ledger and Ethereum, it bridges traditional payment rails and decentralized finance applications.

How RLUSD Maintains Its Peg Through Reserves

RLUSD supply is elastic: new tokens are minted only when equivalent cash, US Treasury bills, or cash equivalents are deposited with a licensed custodian. Conversely, when users redeem their tokens, the corresponding RLUSD is destroyed, and the reserve assets are released. This mint-and-burn cycle ensures that each token in circulation is matched 1:1 by assets held under NYDFS supervision.

The reserve composition is verified through monthly attestations by an independent public accounting firm. This regulatory oversight, provided by the New York Department of Financial Services, sets a standard for transparency that appeals to compliance-conscious institutions. The use of segregated accounts at approved custodians further isolates the reserve from the issuer's operational risks.

Institutional Use Cases and Multi-Chain Access

Where RLUSD differentiates itself from generic stablecoins is in its native integration with Ripple's payments network. Enterprises can leverage RLUSD for real-time settlement across borders without exposure to intraday volatility. The XRP Ledger's design enables low-cost transactions that finalize in seconds, making it practical for international treasury operations even outside conventional banking hours.

The Ethereum deployment opens another dimension: RLUSD can flow into DeFi lending markets, liquidity pools, and automated trading strategies. When moving tokens between the two chains, a bridge mechanism burns the supply on the source network and mints an equal amount on the destination, preserving the overall collateralization ratio. This dual-chain presence gives institutional holders a choice between a dedicated payments environment and a broader smart-contract ecosystem.
