What is Worldcoin (WLD)?

Worldcoin (WLD) is a project built around proving that an online account belongs to a real, unique person. It combines a hardware scanner called the Orb, a digital identity called World ID, and the WLD token. The main focus is to make it easier to distinguish human users from automated accounts without exposing personal details. The network went live in 2023.

What is WLD used for?

WLD is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum and is also available on Arbitrum One. After a person verifies through the Orb, they may receive WLD tokens as part of a distribution program. The token is intended to support governance votes and can also be used for payments inside the Worldcoin ecosystem. A large share of the distribution is aimed at verified individuals rather than a small group of early participants.

How does Worldcoin prove someone is human?

The process starts with an Orb device scanning the unique pattern in a user’s iris. The Orb converts this pattern into a code and deletes the raw images locally instead of storing them in a central database. After the scan, the user receives a World ID. Using zero-knowledge proofs, that ID can show the holder is a real and unique person without sharing the person’s identity or location. This is designed to prevent the same person from creating many fake accounts.

Where does Worldcoin run?

WLD is issued on the Ethereum mainnet. Arbitrum One is also part of the network support, while additional Layer 2 routes are used for many user transactions. This setup is meant to keep verification and token transfers practical when many people are using the system at once.
