Bitcoin (BTC) is a decentralized digital ledger proposed in 2008 under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto and launched in 2009, enabling peer-to-peer value transfers without a central intermediary. The network is maintained by thousands of independent nodes and miners who validate transactions through Proof of Work, grouping them into chronologically linked blocks. A hard-capped supply of 21 million coins is built into the protocol, with new issuance halving at fixed intervals until the limit is reached. Miners compete to add blocks and earn newly minted bitcoin along with transaction fees. Unlike later blockchains built for programmable contracts, Bitcoin's design focuses narrowly on a tamper-resistant, publicly verifiable record of ownership, which established the foundational model for the entire crypto asset class that followed.
