What is Curve (CRV)?

Curve DAO Token (CRV) is the governance and incentive token of Curve Finance, a decentralized exchange built for swapping assets that are expected to hold the same value — such as different dollar-pegged stablecoins or tokenized versions of Bitcoin — with low fees and minimal price impact. CRV is distributed as a kind of partnership share to those who use and govern this infrastructure.

What roles does CRV play in the Curve ecosystem?

CRV serves three distinct purposes in the protocol. First, it rewards users who deposit assets into liquidity pools, encouraging more participation. Second, it gives holders voting rights under the Curve DAO, allowing the community to decide how many rewards each pool receives or how protocol fees are updated. Third, it enables fee sharing: users who lock their CRV collect a portion of the trading fees the platform generates and of the interest paid on crvUSD loans.

What makes Curve's swap formula and LLAMMA different?

Most decentralized exchanges use a constant product formula, which causes large trades to shift the price sharply. Curve's StableSwap formula, by contrast, behaves almost like a fixed exchange rate when the pooled assets are priced close to each other, keeping that shift tiny. Large stablecoin conversions can therefore be made without disrupting the market. LLAMMA, introduced in 2023, extends this logic to borrowing. When someone deposits collateral such as ETH to mint crvUSD and its value drops, the collateral is not liquidated in one go; instead it is gradually converted into stablecoins across price bands. If the price recovers, the process reverses, providing a soft transition rather than a sudden liquidation.

Why does the veCRV lock and the Curve Wars matter to outside projects?

Users who lock CRV for anywhere between one week and four years earn veCRV, a form of voting power. The longer the lock, the greater the voting weight and the larger the reward boost for liquidity providers. Because this voting power decides which pools distribute the most CRV rewards, it is also heavily sought after by external projects. Structures like Convex gather user CRV and concentrate the voting strength. This competition — known in DeFi as the "Curve Wars" — turns Curve into more than an exchange; it becomes a governance hub for a broad ecosystem.
