What is dYdX (DYDX)?
dYdX offers a decentralized venue where traders retain control of their assets while opening leveraged perpetual positions on a wide range of cryptocurrencies. At the centre of this experience sits the DYDX token, the native asset of the dYdX Chain, a purpose-built blockchain that handles both the exchange’s order matching and its community governance.
How does the DYDX token power the chain?
DYDX operates as a Proof-of-Stake token, meaning holders can delegate it to validators who secure the network and process transactions. In return, delegators earn a share of all trading fees collected by the protocol. The same token grants governance rights: anyone holding DYDX can propose changes or vote on matters ranging from fee parameters to software upgrades. On the trading front, holding DYDX lowers platform fees and unlocks access to liquidity incentive programmes designed to keep markets deep and active.
What makes the dYdX Chain’s market structure different?
The project started as an Ethereum-based protocol, but the community voted to migrate to its own Cosmos SDK blockchain in 2023. This move gives the exchange full control over its throughput and fee logic. Running on the CometBFT consensus engine, the dYdX Chain matches every order on-chain, so the lifecycle of a trade — from placement to settlement — is fully verifiable. Traders can use USDC collateral to access perpetual futures on more than 35 crypto assets. A major upgrade called dYdX Unlimited went live in November 2024 and removed the gatekeeping for new listings: the community can now launch a trading pair instantly without any intermediary’s approval. The same upgrade also introduced MegaVault, a community liquidity pool where depositors supply USDC to support markets and earn a yield in return.
