What is GMX (GMX)?
GMX (GMX) is a decentralized exchange (DEX) on Arbitrum, Avalanche, and Solana that enables spot trading and leveraged perpetual swaps directly from a user’s self-custody wallet. No central intermediary is involved; every trade executes on-chain against a liquidity pool. The GMX token anchors the protocol’s governance and, when staked, distributes a portion of trading fees back to holders.
Trading Against a Pool Instead of an Order Book
GMX does not match buyers and sellers through an order book. Each tradable market—whether a crypto pair or a traditional financial asset like gold—has its own isolated liquidity pool (represented by a GM token). When a trader opens a position, the trade is filled at the price provided by a Chainlink oracle, sourced directly from the corresponding pool. This design guarantees execution even in markets with low order-book depth and makes it harder for price manipulation to trigger unfair liquidations. Liquidity providers deposit assets into these pools and earn fees from trades and liquidations. Those who prefer spreading risk across multiple markets can use GLV vaults instead of committing to a single pool.
Staking GMX to Earn a Share of Protocol Revenue
Holding GMX tokens gives you a voice in the protocol’s governance decisions. When you stake GMX, you additionally earn a share of the fees collected from all trading activity on the platform. Staking rewards are typically paid in escrowed GMX (esGMX), a locked version of the token that vests over time into real GMX. This system aligns the interests of token holders with the long-term health of the exchange. As trading volume grows, a portion of the revenue flows back to those who have committed their tokens to the protocol, creating a direct link between usage and reward.
