What is Kamino (KMNO)?
Kamino (KMNO) is the governance token for Kamino Finance, a DeFi protocol on Solana that brings together lending, borrowing, liquidity provision, and leveraged strategies under one roof. The platform aims to simplify access to on-chain credit markets and yield opportunities without needing multiple dApps.
What does the Kamino protocol let you do?
Kamino revolves around three key product areas. K-Lend is a pooled lending market where depositors earn interest represented by kTokens, and borrowers can take out loans against their collateral. The interest rates follow a utilization curve that increases sharply when demand nears capacity. Liquidity vaults automate concentrated liquidity positions on Solana DEXs like Orca – users deposit tokens and receive fee-accumulating receipts while the vault manager handles rebalancing. The third pillar is leverage: Multiply and Long/Short strategies let users amplify exposure with a single transaction, using recursive borrowing. This convenience comes with increased liquidation risk, especially during volatile market moves.
What role does the KMNO token play?
KMNO gives holders a voice in protocol governance. Voting matters include risk parameters such as loan-to-value limits, liquidation thresholds, oracle configurations, and which assets are listed. Staking KMNO also provides a loyalty boost that increases reward allocations during the protocol's ongoing incentive seasons. The longer a user stakes, the larger the boost multiplier they accumulate. However, KMNO does not entitle holders to a direct share of protocol revenue. Fees generated from lending and liquidity vaults flow into the Kamino treasury, and any distribution to token holders is subject to DAO votes. Consequently, growth in the protocol's total value locked or earnings does not automatically translate into token price appreciation.
Kamino launched in August 2022 with automated liquidity vaults and added its lending market in 2023. Founders Asaf Meir, Tal Zelig, and Roy Keyes had previously built together at the Orbs project. KMNO entered circulation in 2024 through a multi-season airdrop program that distributed tokens to early users. The total supply is capped at 10 billion, with a significant portion allocated to community grants and key stakeholders. The protocol has also moved toward institutional use cases by accepting tokenized stocks and treasury fund tokens as collateral, bridging traditional finance and on-chain DeFi.
