What is Ontology Gas (ONG)?
Ontology Gas (ONG) is the fuel token that powers operations on the Ontology blockchain. Ontology also has a governance token called ONT, and ONG is used to pay for every transaction, smart contract execution, and data storage step on the network. ONG is additionally available on the BNB Smart Chain.
What role does the ONG token play on the Ontology network?
ONG’s primary role is covering the cost of activity on the network. When you make a transfer on Ontology, trigger a smart contract, or interact with an on-chain application, the gas fee you pay is calculated in ONG and distributed to the nodes that maintain the network. This mechanism gives node operators a steady incentive to secure the chain while making spam attacks economically impractical. ONG also underpins Ontology’s decentralized identity tools, such as ONT ID; identity verification and data exchange processes run on ONG as well.
Beyond acting as a fee token, ONG sits at the center of the network’s incentive cycle. Holders who stake ONT tokens receive ONG in return for their contribution to network security. As a result, ONG functions as both a means of payment and a participation reward at the same time.
How does the dual-token setup between ONG and ONT work?
Ontology uses a two-token structure to separate the value layer from the utility layer. ONT is the governance and staking token; it is used for voting, electing consensus nodes, and locking up to earn ONG. ONG, on the other hand, is the gas for all day-to-day activity on the network. The practical benefit of this split is that swings in the market value of ONT do not directly change transaction costs. Gas fees remain predictable and are priced in ONG, while ONT is positioned more as a long-term governance and value-holding instrument.
In December 2025, the Ontology community approved an update that reduced ONG’s total supply cap from 1 billion to 800 million. Two hundred million ONG were burned, and a portion of liquidity was permanently locked. In January 2026, the emission rate was adjusted to roughly 1 ONG per second, with 80% of it going directly to ONT stakers.
