What is SHIBA INU (SHIB)?
Shiba Inu (SHIB) is a token launched on Ethereum in August 2020 by an anonymous developer using the name Ryoshi. Originally a meme-inspired answer to Dogecoin, SHIB quickly attracted a massive following called the ShibArmy and expanded into a broader ecosystem with its own decentralized applications.
How do SHIB and the Shibarium network work together?
SHIB is more than just a digital currency; it's closely tied to Shibarium, a Layer-2 scaling solution. Shibarium processes transactions away from Ethereum's congested mainnet, aiming for faster speeds and much lower fees. Instead of SHIB, the network uses the BONE token for transaction costs, and with every block, a portion of SHIB is removed from circulation through an automatic burn mechanism.
The ecosystem includes two other tokens with distinct roles: LEASH and BONE. LEASH has a deliberately scarce total supply of just over 107,000 tokens. BONE acts as the gas token for Shibarium and doubles as the governance token, giving the community a vote on project proposals. Users can interact with all three assets on ShibaSwap, the project's own decentralized exchange, where they can trade, provide liquidity, and stake their holdings to earn rewards.
Why was half of SHIB's supply gifted to Vitalik Buterin?
At launch, Ryoshi locked 50% of the total SHIB supply in a Uniswap liquidity pool and sent the other half directly to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin's wallet. This unusual step was designed to ensure no central figure or development team could control a large stake, leaving the project's fate entirely in the hands of its community.
Buterin responded by permanently removing the vast majority of these tokens from circulation by sending them to an inaccessible wallet, reinforcing the project's decentralized narrative. This event cemented the ShibArmy's role as the project's backbone, driving its evolution from a simple meme token into a functional ecosystem featuring ShibaSwap, Shibarium, and the Shiboshis NFT collection.
