What is SSV Network (SSV)?

SSV Network (SSV) is an open-source infrastructure layer that lets Ethereum validators run across a cluster of independent operators instead of a single machine. It uses Distributed Validator Technology (DVT) to split a validator key into multiple shares, so no single operator ever holds the full key and a single point of failure cannot bring the validator down.

How SSV splits validator duties

The protocol divides each validator key into at least four KeyShares and distributes them among non-trusting nodes. These nodes reach consensus on every task using the QBFT protocol and threshold signatures. If one node goes offline for maintenance or due to a fault, the remaining shares can still carry out the validator’s duties. This design also allows the validator key to be generated and stored offline, keeping it safe from online attacks.

Roles in the network and what the SSV token does

Stakers choose at least four operators, hand them the KeyShares, and pay an annual fee in SSV tokens. Operators run the SSV node software, perform Beacon Chain tasks, and earn staking rewards on behalf of the staker. A separate network fee, also paid in SSV, goes to the DAO that governs the protocol. Beyond fee payments, SSV tokens give holders a voice in the SSV Network DAO, where they can vote on upgrades, treasury decisions, and other key proposals.

Why a distributed setup matters for Ethereum staking

When a validator sits on a single node, any downtime or misconfiguration can lead to missed rewards or even slashing. SSV Network replaces that risk with active-active redundancy: as long as a majority of the operator shares are honest and online, the validator keeps functioning. Stakers can further spread risk by picking operators in different geographies and with different hardware setups. The result is a more resilient, censorship-resistant staking experience that lowers the barrier to running a validator without sacrificing security.
