SuperRare is an Ethereum marketplace built for digital art that exists as single editions, while RARE is the token used to shape the platform’s direction. Each artwork on the marketplace is issued as an NFT, which ties the piece to a verifiable owner and creator. RARE sits outside the buying process itself and focuses on governance.
What does RARE do on SuperRare?
RARE is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. Holders vote through the SuperRare DAO on matters such as platform fees, treasury spending and feature proposals. It also comes into play for Spaces: anyone who wants to run an independent storefront must stake RARE. Art is bought and sold with ETH, so RARE is not the main payment token.
How SuperRare handles digital artwork
Every piece on SuperRare is minted as a one-of-one edition. After the first sale, the artist continues to receive a royalty whenever the work changes hands among collectors. Because the ownership and sale history lives on Ethereum, buyers can trace the artwork’s background instead of relying on a gallery’s word.
Why Spaces changed the platform
SuperRare started in 2018 as an invite-only gallery. With the 2021 introduction of RARE and the DAO, curation power moved outward. Spaces let users stake RARE to open their own gallery fronts, pick artists and earn a commission on sales. The size of the stake influences how visible a Space becomes within the marketplace.
