What is SushiSwap (SUSHI)?
SushiSwap is a decentralized exchange built for swapping crypto assets without relying on a middleman. It was launched in September 2020 as a fork of Uniswap's code, but set itself apart early on by rewarding liquidity providers with its own token, SUSHI, and by putting community voting at the centre of protocol decisions.
How SUSHI rewards reach liquidity providers
Instead of matching buy and sell orders, SushiSwap uses pools that hold pairs of tokens. Anyone can deposit one side of a pair to earn a share of the trading fees collected from that pool. On top of fees, selected pools distribute extra SUSHI tokens to those who supply liquidity. This dual reward system helps keep trading pairs deep while steadily releasing new SUSHI into circulation.
Turning SUSHI into xSUSHI to earn protocol fees
Holding SUSHI also opens the door to the platform's fee-sharing mechanism via a smart contract called SushiBar. When users stake SUSHI there, they receive xSUSHI, which acts like a voucher that grows in value over time. The protocol takes a portion of trading fees, buys SUSHI from the open market, and routes it to the xSUSHI pool. Stakers therefore accumulate more SUSHI without having to trade actively. SUSHI holders also use their tokens to vote on proposals that shape the future of the platform.
Why operating on many chains matters
SushiSwap began on Ethereum but now runs on over 25 networks including BNB Smart Chain, Polygon, Arbitrum One, and Avalanche C-Chain. Being multi-chain means users can pick the network that suits them best—often with lower fees and faster transactions—while still accessing the same swap and reward features. The SUSHI token and the familiar pool structure travel across chains, so the experience and the earning opportunities stay consistent no matter where users choose to trade.
