What is Cetus Protocol (CETUS)?

Cetus Protocol (CETUS) is a decentralized exchange that brings the concentrated liquidity model to the Sui blockchain. Rather than spreading capital across the entire price curve, liquidity providers can choose specific price ranges for their funds, which creates the same market depth with far less capital. The protocol also acts as an aggregator, pulling liquidity from multiple sources on Sui to find the best swap rate for traders.

The CETUS and xCETUS dual-token design

The protocol runs on two tokens that serve different purposes. CETUS is the main circulating token, but holding it alone does not grant a say in protocol decisions or a share of trading fees. Users must lock their CETUS to receive xCETUS, which carries both governance rights and a claim on the revenue generated by swaps. This lock-based structure is designed to reward committed participants and keep liquidity anchored within the protocol over the long term.

The May 2025 exploit and subsequent recovery

Cetus’s recent history includes one of DeFi’s more striking crisis-and-recovery episodes. On May 22, 2025, a flaw in a shared math library used by the protocol was exploited, leading to a significant loss of funds. In an unusual turn, Sui validators were able to freeze a large portion of the stolen assets on-chain, allowing them to be returned. Cetus then restored its liquidity pools with its own reserves and a loan from the Sui Foundation, relaunching fully just 17 days after the incident. A structured compensation program using a portion of the CETUS supply was put in place for affected users.
