What is Scroll (SCR)?
Scroll (SCR) is a Layer-2 network built to address congestion and high fees on Ethereum. It relies on zk-rollup technology, which gathers thousands of transactions off the main chain, compresses them into a single cryptographic proof, and settles the outcome on Ethereum in one go rather than processing each transaction individually.
What does the SCR token do?
SCR is the native token of the Scroll network and serves three main purposes. It is used to pay gas fees for every transaction and smart contract interaction on the network. Holding SCR grants voting power in governance decisions that shape the protocol’s future. The token also functions as an incentive mechanism for validators and provers who contribute to the network’s security.
Why does full Ethereum compatibility matter?
What sets Scroll apart from many other Layer-2 solutions is its bytecode-level compatibility with Ethereum through a zkEVM. In practice, this means thousands of existing decentralized applications and smart contracts can migrate to Scroll with little to no modification. Developers keep using the tools they already know, such as MetaMask and Hardhat, while end users interact with the same applications at a significantly lower cost. Security remains anchored to Ethereum’s consensus, and the network is gradually decentralizing its sequencer and prover roles in line with this compatibility-first approach.
