What is Threshold Network Token (T)?
In early 2022, the Keep Network and NuCypher communities voted to merge their protocols into a single platform: Threshold Network. The resulting T token coordinates both governance and cryptoeconomic security across the merged ecosystem, which specializes in handling encrypted data without exposing it to third parties.
Two legacies behind the T token
Keep had built tBTC, a decentralized bridge that moves Bitcoin onto Ethereum. NuCypher focused on proxy re-encryption—distributing and revoking decryption rights without ever revealing the underlying data. Threshold combined these two toolkits under one roof. The network now runs on threshold cryptography, which means private keys are split among many node operators so that no single party controls them. This powers both confidential data processing and a trust-minimized Bitcoin bridge.
Through tBTC, users convert BTC into an ERC-20 asset via smart contracts—no custodian needed. Every mint and redemption is approved by threshold signatures from staked node operators, distributing trust across the network rather than concentrating it in a central entity.
What T does within Threshold
T is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum with two core functions. First, it grants governance rights: holders vote in the Threshold DAO on fee parameters, treasury allocations, and protocol upgrades. Second, it underpins network security. Node operators stake T to provide cryptographic services, earning fee rebates or waivers on tBTC transactions. T can also be locked in coverage pools that act as collateral for tBTC operations, generating passive income for stakers while absorbing potential risks.
Risks specific to the project
Threshold’s trajectory is closely tied to tBTC adoption. If the bridge sees limited usage, economic activity on the network may stay low. Centralized alternatives like WBTC continue to compete for Bitcoin liquidity. Additionally, a large portion of the total T supply was distributed to NU and KEEP holders during the merger, meaning concentrated positions could influence market dynamics if major holders decide to adjust their stakes.
