What is Cosmos (ATOM)?

Cosmos brings independent blockchains under one communication layer, with the ATOM token powering the Cosmos Hub at its centre. The network aims to let separate chains exchange data and assets without giving up their own rules, while giving developers a practical way to launch their own chains.

What role does ATOM play on the Cosmos Hub?

ATOM is used in three main ways. Holders can stake their tokens with validators to help secure the network and receive newly issued ATOM as a reward. The same token gives voting power on proposals that change network parameters. It is also the unit in which transaction fees are paid on the Hub.

How do independent chains connect to each other?

Cosmos distinguishes between zones and hubs. Zones are application-specific chains that keep their own validator set and security. Hubs act as routers; the Cosmos Hub is the best-known example and connects many zones.

The Cosmos SDK provides developers with ready-made modules, so they can build a chain without coding consensus from scratch. Chains then communicate through the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol, which transfers tokens and data directly between two chains. Unlike bridging through a central party, IBC does not require both chains to trust the same intermediary.

What makes Cosmos different from shared-security networks?

Several Layer 1 projects aim for interoperability, but Cosmos takes a sovereignty-first approach. Each zone is responsible for its own security, so a failure in one application does not spread to the entire ecosystem. The Tendermint consensus engine behind many Cosmos chains also provides fast finality — transactions are confirmed in about six seconds and do not require multiple confirmations.
