What is Elrond eGold (EGLD)?

MultiversX is a blockchain platform built to meet the speed and cost demands of large-scale decentralized applications. Its native asset, EGLD, powers all operations on the network, which was previously known as Elrond. The platform stands out by simultaneously splitting up network nodes, transactions, and the blockchain's stored state across multiple segments to boost performance.

How Adaptive State Sharding Works

The core technical idea behind MultiversX is Adaptive State Sharding. Unlike simpler models that only split up network traffic, this approach also divides the blockchain's state. Each shard only stores the account balances and smart contract data relevant to its own section, so no single node is forced to carry the entire network's history. A special coordination chain called the metachain keeps everything in sync, finalizing blocks roughly every six seconds. This parallel processing design allows the network to scale horizontally as the number of nodes and shards grows.

The Role of EGLD in the Ecosystem

EGLD acts as the fuel for the MultiversX machine. Every transaction and smart contract execution requires a small fee paid in this token. Beyond simple payments, EGLD enables users to participate in securing the chain: you can stake it directly to run a validator node or delegate your holdings to an existing validator to earn a share of the rewards. Holding staked EGLD also grants voting power in protocol governance, letting the community decide on software upgrades and network parameters. The token has a capped total supply, and a portion of each transaction fee is burned, creating deflationary pressure over time.

Selecting Validators with Secure Proof of Stake

The network relies on a consensus mechanism called Secure Proof of Stake (SPoS). To process a block, it randomly selects a small committee of validators from the wider pool, weighting their chances by the amount of EGLD they have staked and their past reliability. This is more efficient than having every validator communicate for every block. The system also incorporates a layer of specialized nodes called fishermen, who constantly check the work of validators. If a fisherman spots an invalid block, it can challenge it and earn a reward, adding an extra layer of security to the fast finality process.
