What is kaia (KAIA)?

Kaia (KAIA) is a Layer-1 blockchain born from the 2024 merger of two major Asian networks: Klaytn, built by Kakao, and Finschia, built by LINE. The union gives the chain direct exposure to more than 250 million combined users of KakaoTalk and LINE, two of Asia's dominant messaging platforms.

Why did Klaytn and Finschia merge into a single chain?

Both networks already had strong regional footholds, but operating separately meant splitting developer talent, liquidity, and governance. In January 2024, over 90% of each community voted in favor of merging, and the Kaia mainnet went live in August of the same year. Now the technical infrastructure that powers Kakao and LINE's ecosystems sits on one chain, letting builders reach users of both super-apps through a single network managed by the Abu Dhabi-based Kaia DLT Foundation.

How was the KAIA token created, and what is it used for?

The merger retired the old KLAY and FNSA tokens. Conversion happened at rates of 1 KLAY = 1 KAIA and 148.08 FNSA = 1 KAIA. Klaytn balances were converted automatically, while Finschia holders used a burn-and-claim process through the Kaia Portal. KLAY is no longer a valid asset; KAIA is the sole native token. It covers transaction fees, allows holders to stake for network security, and gives weight in governance votes that shape protocol decisions.

How do Mini Dapps turn messaging users into Web3 participants?

Kaia's adoption model relies on "Mini Dapps" — lightweight on-chain applications that live inside KakaoTalk and LINE. Users interact with them without setting up a separate wallet or handling technical steps, encountering Web3 functions in an environment they already use daily. The network is tuned for this scale: roughly 4,000 transactions per second, one-second block times, and gas costs around one-tenth of Ethereum's. The strategy is heavily anchored in Asian markets, which concentrates the growth opportunity but also ties the project's trajectory to adoption patterns in that region.
