What is MegaETH (MEGA)?

MegaETH (MEGA) is an EVM-compatible Layer 2 network built to give on-chain applications response times comparable to the traditional web. Rather than just increasing transaction throughput, the project targets millisecond-level latency — a design choice that serves high-frequency trading and real-time applications first.

What does the MEGA token do?

MEGA is the native token of the MegaETH network, with three main roles. First, it can be staked to support the network's growth targets; rewards tied to specific performance milestones unlock as those targets are met. Second, staking MEGA gives holders a voice in protocol governance, allowing them to vote on decisions that shape the network's direction.

The third function is tied to Proximity Markets Bidding. Applications that want to sit physically closest to MegaETH's sequencer — shaving off every possible millisecond of delay — bid against each other using MEGA. Winning the auction means your transactions get priority access to the fastest lane in the network.

How does MegaETH achieve its speed?

MegaETH uses an Optimistic Rollup architecture but organizes the work differently from most Layer 2s. Instead of waiting for multiple nodes to agree on every transaction, a single high-performance sequencer executes transactions instantly. Final verification happens afterwards, handled by Ethereum mainnet and other validator nodes in the background.

This split gives users the feel of immediate confirmation while security still rests on Ethereum's consensus. The design is what makes block times around 10 milliseconds possible in theory.

What sets MegaETH apart from other Layer 2 solutions?

Most scalable networks force a trade-off. High-speed Layer 1 chains may not support existing Ethereum tools without rewrites. EVM-compatible Layer 2s preserve compatibility but typically cannot match the responsiveness of a centralized server. MegaETH claims it can deliver both — full EVM compatibility with sub-second latency — in a single network.

Beyond the technical design, there is a value-capture loop built into the token. The MegaETH Foundation uses rewards it receives from the USDm money market to buy back MEGA tokens from the open market regularly; the buyback volume scales as USDm adoption grows across the ecosystem. There is also a planned sequencer rotation system where operators stake MEGA to participate, with selection based on a combination of stake size and measured performance.
