What is Oasis Network (ROSE)?
ROSE is the native token of Oasis Network, a Layer 1 blockchain that separates security duties from smart contract execution. This design allows certain applications to process data without exposing it to everyone on the network. The aim is to give users control over how their information is shared and used.
How Oasis Network separates consensus from computation
The chain uses a proof-of-stake consensus layer where validators confirm blocks and record state changes. Above that sits a ParaTime layer made of independent runtimes. Each ParaTime can be tailored for a specific use case: Emerald runs Ethereum-style contracts, while Cipher keeps data encrypted even while a contract is being executed.
Because ParaTimes do not share a single processing lane, heavy traffic in one does not slow down the others. Developers can choose the environment that matches their privacy and compatibility needs.
What ROSE is used for
Within Oasis, ROSE covers three main roles:
- It serves as the gas token for transaction fees on the consensus layer.
- Validators and delegators lock ROSE to secure the network and earn rewards.
- Holding ROSE gives voting power in protocol governance.
How the network keeps data private
Confidential ParaTimes rely on a trusted execution environment (TEE). A TEE is a hardware-isolated area that decrypts data, runs the smart contract, and re-encrypts the result before sending it out. Node operators never see the plaintext content.
Oasis also supports tokenized data, giving users the ability to grant or revoke access to their information. This approach makes data sharing an explicit choice rather than a default.
